Christian Quest a connu l’âge d’or de la télématique avec son entreprise JCA avant d’aborder le Web au début des années 1990. Emblématique de ces entrepreneurs français qui ont co-construit l’enfance numérique de la France, il se consacre aujourd’hui en parallèle de sa vie professionnelle à la conservation du patrimoine lié au Minitel.
Cet entretien réalisé par Benjamin G. Thierry aborde l’itinéraire de Christian Quest en trois temps : d’abord la découverte de la télématique et la mise en place de l’offre de JCA en matière de réalisation de services, ensuite le passage à Internet et ses conséquences pour terminer sur les enjeux et les moyens de la conservation du patrimoine numérique que constitue la télématique.

Le parcours de Jean-Claude Michot, qui s’inscrit à la fois dans les innovations télématiques des années 1980 et 1990 et dans celles qui touchent à Internet et au Web dans la décennie 1990, témoigne d’une continuité certaine dans l’histoire du numérique et de ses cultures. Cette continuité est palpable dans l’aventure France Teaser qu’il retrace pour nous, depuis la création de la société pour permettre de télécharger des logiciels via Minitel à son passage sur le réseau des réseaux. Mais c’est aussi dans QBBS, BBS du 3614 que se lit une continuité d’usages, ici moins informatiques que communicationnels. De France Teaser à Gandi, Jean-Claude Michot éclaire aussi plus généralement le contexte entrepreneurial d’une économie numérique en plein développement.

The Malware Museum is a collection of malware programs, usually viruses, that were distributed in the 1980s and 1990s on home computers. Once they infected a system, they would sometimes show animation or messages that you had been infected. Through the use of emulations, and additionally removing any destructive routines within the viruses, this collection allows you to experience virus infection of decades ago with safety.

HistoInformatics2017 – the 4th International Workshop on Computational History will be held on 6 November, 2017 in conjunction with the 26th ACM International Conference on Information and Knowledge Management (CIKM 2017), Singapore. Traditionally, historical research is based on the hermeneutic investigation of preserved records and artifacts to provide a reliable account of the past and to discuss different hypotheses. Alongside this hermeneutic approach historians have always been interested to translate primary sources into data and used methods, often borrowed from the Social Sciences, to analyze them. A new wealth of digitized historical documents have however opened up completely new challenges for the computer-assisted analysis of e.g. large text or image corpora. Historians can greatly benefit from the advances of Computer and Information sciences which are dedicated to the processing, organization and analysis of such data. New computational techniques can be applied to help verify and validate historical assumptions. We call this approach HistoInformatics, analogous to Bioinformatics and ChemoInformatics which have respectively proposed new research trends in Biology and Chemistry. The main topics of the proposed workshop are: (1) support for historical research and analysis in general through the application of Computer Science theories or technologies, (2) analysis and re-use of historical texts, (3) analysis of collective memories, (4) visualisations of historical data, (4) access to large wealth of accumulated historical knowledge.
This is a highly interdisciplinary workshop that goes beyond traditional computer science topics. The workshop emphasizes non-standard, research-oriented informatics technologies for solving novel research problems and scenarios. Our objective is to provide for the two different research communities a place to meet and exchange ideas and to facilitate discussion. We hope the workshop will result in a survey of current problems and potential solutions, with particular focus on exploring opportunities for collaboration and interaction of researchers working on various subareas within Computer Science and History Sciences.

(…) For HaPoC 2017 we welcome contributions from logicians, philosophers and historians of computing as well as from philosophically aware computer scientists and mathematicians. We also invite contributions on the use of computers in art. As HaPoC conferences aim to provide a platform for interdisciplinary discussions among researchers, contributions stimulating such discussions are preferable. Topics include but are not limited to:
NB: The conference will be preceded by a special workshop on the reception of Hilbert’s axiomatic method in Eastern Europe on 3 October 2017, organized by Mate Szabó (see the link in the left column for more details).
Accompanying cultural programme will include: the remake of the 1968 Brno exhibition Computer Graphic(featuring Frieder Nake and others), the first computer art exhibition in Eastern Europe, preceding Cybernetic Serendipity by several months, Live coding performance (inspired by the Exhibition Computer Graphic), the concert Exposition of New Music (contemporary music), and field recordings of Brno (student project).
A selection of revised contributions to the Conference will be published in a Special Issue of Philosophy & Technology (Springer).
