« Disrespect des Fonds: Rethinking Arrangement and Description in Born-Digital Archives » by Jefferson Bailey in Archive Journal, summer 2013 (issue 3)

(…) How will traditional principles of archival arrangement and description be challenged or modified to account for born-digital materials? Arrangement and description have long been the primary method of facilitating the use of archives, and their methodologies have been dependent upon the principle of respect des fonds. The articulation of this theory in 1841 has been held as the “starting point” or beginning of the modern era of archival theory, a “watershed” event establishing the “basic principle” and “very core” of the archival endeavor. Superlatives abound. Respect des fonds, “more than any other principle, has come to provide the archival profession with a unique identity.”1

But respect des fonds was born of a particular historic moment, for a particular type of archival document, and was conceived to address the practical needs of specific social circumstances. (…)

CfP International Journal on Digital Libraries : Special Issue on Web Archiving

Capture d’écran 2016-03-09 à 18.55.05Web archiving will soon celebrate its 20th birthday. The community as a whole has collected large amounts of web content, providing a fertile ground for researchers to explore. Both the scope and techniques of web archiving are also fast expanding. Collaborative crawling, focused crawling, proactive crawling, and going beyond crawling are only a few approaches that the community is exploring.

While growing and aggregating existing web archives, this international community is also improving archive usability, and incubating new user groups and new ideas. Thus, the community working on web archives includes social scientists, archivists, librarians, big data / information scientists, (web) technologists, and many others.

Extended deadline : April 1st.

The Case for the Preservation of R&D Project Websites

« About 1 year ago, Arquivo.pt performed an experiment to preserve the .EU domain.

We are now trying to focus on preserving sites of R&D projects. To this end, our first idea was to use the EU Open Data Portal to identify these project URLs. The problem is that from the 25 608 R&D projects funded by FP7 listed by the EU Open Data Portal, only 7.9% had an associated project URL.

So, the first main challenge is to identify R&D project web sites to be preserved.

And you can help! »

Pionnières dans l’archivage du .eu, les archives du Web portugaises s’intéressent aujourd’hui à la préservation des sites de projets, notamment européens, et de leurs résultats intermédiaires.
